Okupacija u 26 slika (Occupation in 26 Pictures). 1978. Yugoslavia. Directed by Lordan Zafranović. Cinematography by Karpo Godina. 35mm. In Serbo-Croatian, Italian; English subtitles. 116 min.
Exquisitely photographed by Karpo Godina, this Croatian/Yugoslavian variation on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom is a portrait of life in Dubrovnik under Italian occupation during World War II. A powerful statement on individual and collective evil, the film inscribes the devastating rift between three friends as they choose very different paths in the fight against fascism.
