Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. 1969. Great Britain. Directed by Terence Fisher. Screenplay by Bert Batt. With Peter Cushing, Veronica Carlson, Simon Ward. 35mm. 98 min.
Baron Frankenstein has been in a long and interesting correspondence with Dr. Brandt. Curious to meet his pen pal, the Baron travels to Dr. Brandt’s town only to find him ensconced in a psychiatric ward. The Baron decides he could do a brain transplant and wipe out Dr. Brandt’s mental illness. Of course he can’t do it alone, so he enlists a young physician Karl and his fiancée Anna. Actually their participation is more blackmail than voluntary, as the Baron knows Karl has been stealing drugs from the asylum. Frankenstein’s demeanor in this fifth Hammer installment is one of pure self-obsession and determination to see his work and experiments through to fruition, no matter who gets hurt in the process.
