House of Usher. 1960. USA. Directed by Roger Corman. Screenplay by Richard Matheson, based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. With Vincent Price, Mark Damon, Myrna Fahey. 35mm print. 79 min.
The Usher clan is long accursed, and the current generation is already suffering from this antediluvian misfortune. When Philip arrives at the melancholy Usher mansion to find his fiancée Madeline in a catatonic state, her brother Roderick explains the family scourge. As long as more than one Usher sibling survives, they all go insane or suffer ghastly deaths. Roderick is not only otherworldly—he is a deranged murderer who buries his unconscious sister alive.
