A Separation. 2011. Iran. Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi. With Leila Hatami, Peyman Moadi. DCP. In Persian; English subtitles. 123 min.
Simin (Leila Hatami) and Nader (Peyman Moadi) live a comfortable life in Tehran, but Simin is determined to move overseas to bring up their daughter in a different environment. When Nader insists on staying in Iran to take care of his elderly father, divorce seems inevitable. While they are mired in legal proceedings, a chain of events leads them into yet another tangled mess involving a couple from a poor and deeply religious family. What first appears to be a domestic drama turns out to be a piercing, complex text on gender, class, religion, truth, and all that makes up life in modern Iran. Academy Award and Golden Globe winner for Best Foreign Language Film.
