Three Tamil refugees pose as father, mother, and child in order to escape civil war and start a new life in France. Relegated to a rundown housing block controlled by drug lords and conflicting gangs, Dheepan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan), Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan), and their “daughter” Illayaal (Claudine Vinasithamby) try to adapt to one another and their new French identities in spite of the ever-present local warfare that surrounds them in this drama-thriller hybrid. Winner of the 2015 Cannes Palme d’Or.
