A Self-Made Hero. 1996. France. Directed by Jacques Audiard. In French; English subtitles. 107 min.
Set in the waning days of World War II, Jacques Audiard’s droll second feature finds the sheltered Albert Dehousse (Mathieu Kassovitz) awash in ennui. Ineligible for combat, Albert decides to leave his wife and small French village for Paris, where he reinvents himself as a hero of the French Resistance—nine months after the liberation. Albert studies Resistance newspapers and memorizes names and stories to create a new identity and seamlessly integrate himself into a powerful circle.
