Surrender. 1950. USA. Directed by Allan Dwan. With Vera Ralston, John Carroll, Walter Brennan. DCP. 90 min.
Still struggling to make Vera Ralston a star, in the late 1940s Republic chief Hebert Yates attempted to rebrand the former Czech figure skater as a sultry European femme fatale in the Hedy Lamarr mode for this noirish Western directed by Allan Dwan. Escaping a shady past in Houston, Ralston’s Violet Barton arrives in the border town of La Mirada, where she marries a wealthy newspaper owner (William Ching) while trying to seduce his best friend, gambler John Carroll. Tension comes to a head when Violet’s forgotten husband (Francis Lederer) turns up, with blackmail on his mind.
