Fair Wind to Java. 1953. USA. Directed by Joseph Kane. With Fred MacMurray, Vera Ralston. 35mm. 92 min.
After the success of Wake of the Red Witch, Republic purchased Garland Roark’s 1948 novel Fair Wind to Java, intending it as another South Seas adventure for John Wayne. In the end, however, it was Fred MacMurray who played Roark’s swashbuckling 19th-century captain in search of a hidden treasure—a fortune in diamonds the whereabouts of which are known only to the Indonesian court dancer Kim Kim (Vera Ralston) he has rescued from Chinese slavers. In the background, the volcanic island of Krakatau rumbles ominously, thanks to special effects wizards Howard and Theodore Lydecker.
