Heremakono (Waiting for Happiness). 2002. France/Mauritania. Written and directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. 35mm. In French; English subtitles. 96 min.

Abdallah is waiting, but what is Abdallah waiting for? This is never made clear, but Abdallah is enormously patient as the moments tick by. Much of Heremakono is slow and observant; the people who pass by are of only of momentary interest. In a last visit to see his mother before leaving for Europe, Abdallah must finally take action. Filled with poetic imagery and a drama that mainly unfolds in Abdallah’s head, Heremakono is both confounding and enchanting.
