Mira Nair conducted workshops with child actors she recruited from the streets in the months leading up to production, making Salaam Bombay! an especially convincing and compassionate portrait of rough life in the Bombay slums, Dickensian in its rich detail of character and place. The film launched Nair’s career, winning international acclaim and recognition at Cannes, and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1989 Academy Awards.
