Happy-Go-Lucky. 2008. United Kingdom. Written and directed by Mike Leigh. With Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman, Samuel Roukin. 35mm. 119 min.

Poppy, a North London grade school teacher, is a preternaturally happy person. How she maintains her even keel and cheerfulness with stress swirling around her confounds her friends and family. Frankly, her glee irritates them all! This was the breakout role for Sally Hawkins, who went on to even greater critical acclaim—and an Academy Award nomination—for her portrayal of a mute janitor in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water (2017).
