The Actress. 1953. USA. Directed by George Cukor. Screenplay by Ruth Gordon, based on the stage play Years Ago by Ruth Gordon. With Spencer Tracy, Jean Simmons, Teresa Wright. 35mm. 90 min.
Cukor’s film, based on Ruth Gordon’s autobiographical stage play, remains faithful to the story of the young girl who dreams of leaving her working class-life outside of Boston for the stage. Such frivolous dreams do not pay the rent or put food on the table, but Ruthie is determined. Before Ruthie departs for New York her father, Clinton Jones, a tough old salt with a soft spot for his daughter, gives her a much-cherished item to sell if she ever needs money.
