Into the Abyss. 2011. USA/Germany/Great Britain. Directed by Werner Herzog. 35mm. 107 min.
In 2001 a horrendous triple murder was committed in Conroe, Texas. Michael Perry and Jason Burkett were convicted of killing a mother, her son, and his friend in cold blood. In Into the Abyss, Perry is on death row while Burkett is serving a 40-year sentence. Herzog meets the convicts and asks simple, direct questions about their lives and their heinous actions. There is no doubt about guilt here; Herzog focuses instead on more personal territory, demonstrating skillful restraint and lack of judgment. He also interviews Perry and Burkett’s families and those of the victims.
