Bugsy. 1991. USA. Directed by Barry Levinson. Screenplay by James Tobak, based on the book by Dean Jennings. With Warren Beatty, Annette Benning, Harvey Keitel. 35mm. 136 min.
The desolate Nevada desert became a gambling mecca do to the ambitions of Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, who in the early 1940s took money entrusted to him by the East Coast mob and went to Las Vegas, a backwater where almost no one stopped. What Bugsy visualized was a desert oasis for gamblers, showgirls, entertainers, and risk-takers of all kinds. He fell in love with an ingénue named Virginia Hill, she inspired him to open the Flamingo Hotel, and the Las Vegas legend was born.
