When Charlie Babbitt’s father dies back East, Charlie discovers he’s inherited a vintage car and the care of his older, autistic brother Raymond, aka Rainman. There is a $3 million trust fund for Raymond, and Charlie, angry that he’s been cut out, nevertheless wants to bring Raymond to California. Raymond, who has memorized the dates and statistics of every commercial airline crash, refuses to fly, so the brothers get to know each other while driving cross-country in their 1949 Buick.
