Good Morning, Vietnam. 1987. USA. Directed by Barry Levinson. Screenplay by Mitch Markowitz. With Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker, Bruno Kirby. DCP. 120 min.
Robin Williams stars as real-life DJ Adrian Cronauer, who was sent to Vietnam to bring some levity to the Armed Forces Radio Service. An innovative antiauthoritarian, Cronauer spiced up his broadcasts with rock ’n‘ roll and irreverent commentary, and soon became a favorite among the enlisted men. Hoping for a more spontaneous performance, Levinson supposedly prevented Williams from meeting Cronauer so as to circumvent Williams’s expert mimicry. Williams, whose radio broadcast segments were mainly unscripted and ad-libbed, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
