Dirty Ho. 1979. Hong Kong. Directed by Lau Kar-leung. With Gordon Liu Chia-hui, Wong Yue, Kara Wai. DCP. In Cantonese; English subtitles. 102 min.
Master Wang (Gordon Liu Chia-hui) poses as a wine and antiques connoisseur to hide his true nobility and kung fu prowess. When he meets Dirty Ho (Wong Yue), a witty con artist, Wang knows he has found the right man to help him untangle a royal succession plot. Injured in an attempt on his life, Wang puts Ho through backbreaking kung fu training in anticipation of his enemies’ treachery. A series of superbly choreographed set pieces, including a humor-infused sequence in which Wang turns a brothel courtesan (Kara Wai) into a lethal weapon, proves Lau Kar-leung a most inventive, sharp-minded action director.
