Tess of the Storm Country. 1932. USA. Directed by Alfred Santell. With Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell, Dudley Digges. 35mm. 82 min.
After serving twice as a vehicle for Mary Pickford (in 1914 and 1922), the 1909 Grace Miller White novel returned to the screen in 1932 as a showcase for Fox’s enduring romantic couple, Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. Janet is the daughter of a sea captain now retired to a cottage on the coast of Maine; Charlie is the son of the local squire, whom Janet rescues from a motorboat accident under the sure hand of director Alfred Santell (That Brennan Girl).
