Rackety Rax. 1932. USA. Directed by Alfred Werker. With Victor McLaglen, Greta Nissen, Nell O’Day. 35mm. 70 min.

Victor McLaglen stars as a gambling kingpin who decides that college football (the new rage of the period) is ripe for a takeover, so he buys a foundering Midwestern college and packs the team with his staff thugs. Directed by the protean Alfred Werker, and decked out in spectacular Art Deco sets by Gordon Wiles (Transatlantic), this was Fox’s contribution to the cycle of feverishly surreal comedies then current in Hollywood (Million Dollar Legs, Duck Soup).
