Joan Bennett, still in her blonde period, plays Bret Harte’s frontier tomboy Salomy Jane, awakening to her sexuality (and Charles Farrell, as the stranger in town) in Raoul Walsh’s zesty, tongue-in-cheek adaptation of a popular 19th-century stage melodrama, partly filmed in California’s redwood forests.
