In conjunction with our weeklong run of his celebrated feature debut In the Last Days of the City, Tamer El Said presents an evening of moving images and conversation centered on Cairo’s Cimatheque - Alternative Film Centre, the multi-purpose cinema space El Said has co-helmed since 2012. The venue, part of a vibrant tradition of artist-run film spaces in the region, is the first of its kind in offering screenings, workshops, and a working film lab and archive. El Said’s curatorial and artistic activities converge in a wide-ranging consideration of cinema's relationship with site, memory, and the construction of cultural heritage. This Modern Mondays event explores the mutability of these concepts through a selection of titles from Egypt rarely screened in the US. Films that have helped to shape Egypt's national visual culture are shown in parallel with works conveying the hidden history of cinematic production, as captured by home movies and amateur films (many now housed at Cimatheque) that urgently reclaim the need for artistic self-representation.
