The John [double screen version]. 1966. USA. Directed by Andy Warhol. With Susan Bottomly, Angelina “Pepper” Davis, Patrick Fleming, Ed Hood, Gerard Malanga, Mario Montez, Rene Ricard, Ingrid Superstar, Mary Woronov. Digital 16mm film transfer. 66 min.
The John stars Ed Hood as the titular character and Patrick Fleming as his “tot” property in the story of two men in bed whose assignation gets interrupted by friends and neighbors. All four reels of The John were shown during premiere screenings of The Chelsea Girls and advertised as “Room 416—The John” and “Room 116—George’s Room.” However, as the film continued its run, revisions were made as to which reels would be projected. Ultimately, only reels three and four were chosen for what has now become the standard version. In 1967 The John was made available for rental in either single or double screen.
