Shot in writer George Plimpton’s famous 72nd Street apartment, The John stars Ed Hood as the titular character and Patrick Fleming as his “tot” property in the story of two men in bed whose assignation gets interrupted by friends and neighbors Mario Montez, Angelina “Pepper” Davis, Susan Bottomly, Mary Woronov, Gerard Malanga, and Rene Ricard. Hood tries to maintain control of Fleming, as well as the situation, while everyone talks, drinks, smokes, and wrestles on his bed. All four reels of The John were included in earlier screenings of The Chelsea Girls, but only the last two are seen in what is now the standard version.
