Though Hitchcock’s Rebecca won Best Picture in 1941, John Ford took the statuette for Best Director for The Grapes of Wrath. Hitchcock never received a Best Director Oscar. Truffaut asked, “[Rebecca] won an Oscar, didn’t it?” Hitchcock responds, “Yes, the Academy voted it the best picture of the year.” Truffaut adds, “I believe that’s the only Oscar you’ve ever won.” Hitchcock replies, “I’ve never received an Oscar.”
