Curator Roxana Marcoci calls Christopher Williams “a creator of visual essays.” These “essays” are photographs whose formal and conceptual rigor confronts broadly diverse histories. They present, in the words of the artist, “different choreographic possibilities” or “vistas” for viewing and perceiving the work. In this session, four of Williams’s “essays” will be read through multiple
lenses, with the goal of mining the photographs for experiential and interpretive possibilities. Following a short lecture on each photo, participants will be invited to enter into dialogue with the works by creating their own “visual essays” of the works through brief writing, drawing, and speaking exercises.
