The Last Wagon. 1956. USA. Directed by Delmer Daves. Screenplay by James Edward Grant, Daves, Gwen Bagni Gielgud. With Richard Widmark, Felicia Farr, Susan Kohner. DCP. 98 min.
The Western was Delmer Daves’s specialty, and The Last Wagon does not disappoint. Gristly trapper Comanche Todd (Richard Widmark), an orphan of white missionaries who was brought up by a Comanche family, seeks revenge for the murder of his Comanche wife and children. Chained to a wagon by a vengeful sheriff, Todd—along with a small group of teenagers—manages to survive a sudden Apache attack. The ambiguity and abstruseness of Todd’s subsequent actions is typical of Daves’s complex character development.
