Pueblerina. 1948. Mexico. Directed by Emilio Fernández. Screenplay by Mauricio Magdaleno, Emilio Fernández. Cinematography by Gabriel Figueroa. With Columba Dominguez, Roberto Cañedo. 35mm. In Spanish; English subtitles. 128 min.
Arguably Fernández’s last great achievement in the epic, folkloric style that made him an international figure, Pueblerina is set in the shadow of the twin volcanos Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl—natural monuments that find their equivalents in dignity and forbearance in the peasant couple, portrayed by Columba Dominguez and Roberto Cañedo, as they together face the evil landowners who have forced them from their farm.
