Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. 1974. Mexico/USA. Directed by Sam Peckinpah. Screenplay by Sam Peckinpah, Gordon Dawson, based on a story by Peckinpah, Frank Kowalski. With Warren Oates, Isela Vega, Emilio Fernández. DCP. In English; Spanish subtitles. 112 min.
In his final personal film, shot in Mexico with a largely Mexican crew, Sam Peckinpah cast his old friend Fernández as the gang boss (succinctly known as “El Jefe”) who issues the command of the title, ordering his lieutenants to execute the interloper who seduced his granddaughter. In what rapidly evolves into a grotesque black comedy, it falls to a befuddled Warren Oates to follow through.
