Janitzio. 1935. Mexico . Directed by Carlos Navarro. Screenplay by Luis Márquez, Roberto Quigley. With Emilio Fernández, María Teresa Orozco, Gilberto González. DCP. In Spanish; English subtitles. 56 min.
Fernández appeared in his first leading role, as a heroic representative of the “butterfly fishermen” of Lake Pátzcuaro, in the sole feature film directed by the actor Carlos Navarro. Positioning “pure” archetypal characters within a timeless landscape, the film strongly influenced Fernández’s own filmmaking; his 1948 Maclovia is a partial remake.
