In conjunction with the exhibition Naeem Mohaiemen: There Is No Last Man, this panel discussion will explore transnational connections, such as those between German and Indian intellectuals from the nineteenth century to the years before the Second World War, as described in Kris Manjapra’s Age of Entanglement: German and Indian Intellectuals across Empire (Harvard, 2014). Manjapra’s text resonates throughout Mohaiemen’s exhibition, which looks at tactical and accidental overlaps between German inter-war triumphalism, Indian independence struggles, and the figure of “Der Muselmann” in the Holocaust camps.
Taking the exhibition as a starting point, Gayatri Gopinath, Associate Professor in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, and the Director of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at NYU; Ritty Lukose, Associate Professor in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University; and Andrew Weiner, Assistant Professor of Art Theory and Criticism in the Department of Art and Art Professions at NYU–Steinhardt; will discuss global entanglements, frictions, and cooperations within their research.
