Kidnapped. 1978. USA. Directed by Eric Mitchell. Cinematography by Seth Tillett. With Mitchell, Anya Phillips, Patti Astor, Duncan Smith, Gordon Stevenson. 16mm from Super8mm. 62 min.
Said to be a “remake” of Andy Warhol’s Vinyl (1965) (itself a favorite of the Club 57 crowd), Mitchell’s loosely edited debut feature also bears comparison to Jean-Luc Godard’s early French New Wave studies of youthful angst and politics. Set in a seedy Lower East Side apartment with a cast of disaffected downtown personalities headed by Anya Phillips and Mitchell himself, the film’s visually off-kilter conversations about sex, unfocused social commentary, and frenzied dance scene culminate in casual acts of recreational sadism.
