Sherlock Holmes. 1932. USA. Directed by William K. Howard. Screenplay by Bertram Millhauser, based on the play by William Gillette. With Clive Brook, Miriam Jordan, Ernest Torrence. DCP. 69 min.

William K. Howard’s take on the consulting detective is perhaps the most rousing and stylistically adventurous of Holmes movies, a Bondian adventure full of action and Wellesian surprises, featuring Clive Brook as a witheringly sarcastic Holmes and the great character actor Ernest Torrence (Steamboat Bill, Jr.) as a memorable Moriarty. Restored by The Museum of Modern Art with funding from 20th Century Fox.
