Outrage. 1950. USA. Directed by Ida Lupino. Screenplay by Ida Lupino, Malvin Wald, Collier Young. With Mala Powers, Tod Andrews, Robert Clarke. HDCAM. 75 min.
Directed, cowritten, and produced by Ida Lupino for her independent company The Filmakers, Outrage was one of the first Hollywood films to deal extensively with the subject of rape—although the Production Code prohibited the use of the words “rape” and “rapist.” Mala Powers stars as a bookkeeper who is attacked on her way home from work, and enters a spiral of trauma that leaves her isolated and afraid. Digitally preserved by Paramount Pictures. Special thanks to George Feltenstein, Warner Bros.
