Before Scarface, Howard Hughes’s contribution to the gangster film cycle was this bold crime film, directed with verve by Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front) and starring Thomas Meighan as a shoot-first Chicago cop and Louis Wolheim as his Capone-like nemesis. Restored in 2016 by the Academy Film Archive. Elements for this restoration provided by The Howard Hughes Corporation and by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, College of Fine Arts’ Department of Film and its Howard Hughes Collection at the Academy Film Archive.
