In this spy thriller, Howard Graham has covert munitions business with the Turkish navy. While in a nightclub with his wife, he manages to dodge a bullet that was meant for him. Enter Colonel Haki, who practically shoves Howard onto a ship headed out of town before he can say goodbye to his wife. What’s the hurry? And are the passengers aboard ship to be trusted? While Welles does not get screen credit as codirector, you can see his many visual flourishes, such as the use of shadows and evocative camera angles.
