Canadian photographer Marcus Leatherdale was a ubiquitous presence in the Downtown scene, documenting friends, lovers and scenesters in portraits that marry formal accomplishment and edgy energy. Leatherdale’s photo series Urban Women, which was exhibited at Club 57 in the artist's first solo exhibition, is the inspiration behind this afternoon celebration. Leatherdale will narrate a slideshow of the series—which included famed DJ Anita Sarko, bodybuilder Lisa Lyon, and the gender-bending Divine—before being joined by Urban Woman Claudia Summers. Summers, a musician, it-girl, and practicing dominatrix in the 1970s and ’80s, will read a recent short story channeling the sex, drugs, and grit of that era’s Times Square.
Free and open to the public. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at noon at the film desk.
Gallery will close at 3:00 p.m. for the performance.
