Phantom Thread. 2017. USA. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. 35mm. 115 min.
Paul Thomas Anderson has taken us deep into the lives of singularly complex, creative characters before, but none with quite the panache of Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis). An extremely British couture dress-maker on the 1950s fashion scene, Woodcock is a "confirmed bachelor" whose latest muse (an astonishing Vicki Krieps) is much more than just the beautiful waitress he first encounters. Laced (literally) with resplendent beauty and biting humor—most pointedly from Lesley Manville, as Woodcock's wise sister Cyril—Phantom Thread is bespoke cinema of the highest order.
