Wren (Susan Berman) wants to be famous…or does she want to be infamous? Plastering “Missing” posters of herself around the Lower East Side to create notoriety, she lands at the Peppermint Lounge, a famous punk rock club. Catching the eye of Paul as she prowls through the subway, Wren begins to date him—as a means to an end. After hatching a plan to move to Los Angeles to gain access to the bands she loves, Wren gets burned by Eric (Richard Hell), a former member of Smithereens. Will she make it on the scene, or will the mean streets of 1980s New York prove too much for her? Smithereens captures a changing music scene and follows the dreams of a runaway girl without a plan or a cause. Preserved by The Museum of Modern Art, New York
