Join us for a conversation with Dapper Dan about the dynamics of fashion, design, messaging, and appropriation. Held in conjunction with Items: Is Fashion Modern? and the People’s Studio, the discussion will be moderated by Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, and Director, Research and Development, The Museum of Modern Art.
Dapper Dan pioneered streetwear in the early 1980s, co-opting luxury branding to design original garments with high-end detail. He has outfitted Eric B. & Rakim, LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa, Mike Tyson, Missy Elliott, JAY-Z, Aaliyah, P. Diddy, and Floyd Mayweather, among others, and his work has been featured in The New York Times, Elle, Vogue, W, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker, and on CNN. His work has been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution, The Museum at FIT, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art.
This program meets in the People’s Studio and is free for members and Museum admission ticket holders. No registration is required.
