Passionately booed at its Cannes premiere, L’avventura is today considered Antonioni’s greatest contribution to modernism, a film whose style cannot be divorced from its themes of alienation and despair. The story involves a woman who mysteriously disappears during a boating trip to Sicily, forcing her lover and her friend to reflect on their own tenuous connection to each other.
