I vinti (The Vanquished). 1953. Italy/France. Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Screenplay by Antonioni, Suso Cecchi D'Amico. With Etchika Choureau, Jacques Sempey, Henri Poirier. Digital Projection. In Italian; English subtitles. 113 min.
Antonioni’s first stab at portraying violently disaffected youth was a mixed success—certainly he found his footing by the time he made Zabriskie Point in 1970—but this episodic film, which he shot and based on real events in Rome, Paris, and London, so deeply unsettled censors that it was banned for years in England and France and subjected to severe modifications by Italy’s ruling Social Democratic party.
