Émigré curator and art critic Edit DeAk (1948–2017) documented New York’s post-punk scene and the artists and luminaries who defined it with her. This vast, deeply personal body of work was shown almost exclusively as Super 8 home movies in her Soho loft, and occasionally at the alternative screening venues that flourished downtown, including Club 57. As part of the exhibition Club 57, we are hosting a rare screening from DeAk’s Beyond Genre film cycle (1977–86) in the appropriately intimate exhibition gallery. The films are presented with DeAk’s collaborators: the program is introduced by Patrick Fox, who served as co-editor of the film cycle at the time of DeAk’s death, and is accompanied by music from eminent 1980s club DJ Johnny Dynell.
Free and open to the public. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins at 3:00 p.m. at the film desk.
