In his most satisfying movie to date, playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh brings his gallows humor and moral shading to the American South, where the unsolved rape and murder of a teenage girl sets off a wincingly raw, surprisingly funny examination of smalltown rage, stupidity, and dignity. Woody Harrelson, as the beloved police chief, and Sam Rockwell, as his redneck deputy, may be no match for the imaginatively foulmouthed, grief-stricken mother played by Frances McDormand, but they are all incandescent in an ensemble film that’s sure to be recognized this awards season.
