US Marshall Rooster Cogburn is a stubborn, craggy mule of a man, a no-nonsense loner who certainly wouldn’t dream of taking orders from a teenaged girl. When Mattie Ross meets Rooster, she is looking for someone to bring justice to the memory of her murdered father. This remake of the 1969 film starring John Wayne and Kim Darby is more Old West than Old Hollywood. Bridges looks like he’s in desperate need of a bath throughout the picture, but isn’t that the way a 19th-century plainsman should look? True Grit was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.
