Both Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko sought to reinvent and extend painting beyond painting itself. Color, space, light, composition, and medium were mere preludes to these artists’ focused explorations of the existential, emotional, and spiritual facets of the human condition. In an examination of a single work by each of the artists, this session will seek
to make manifest the larger themes in each work through a series of attentional exercises.
