Miller’s Crossing. 1990. USA. Directed by Joel Coen. Screenplay by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen. With Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro. 35mm. 115 min.
Visually evoking 1930s gangster pictures, Miller’s Crossing tells the story of Tom Reagan, loyal lieutenant to local Irish mob boss Leo O’Bannon, whose loyalty is tested when a byzantine turf war breaks out. Leo is in love with Verna, whose bookie brother Bernie is playing all sides against the middle. Bernie has caught on to how Leo and the local boys are making money on fixed boxing matches and some of the town hoods want him gone…for good. Will Leo chance losing his lady in order to keep the peace among criminals? And will Tom pick the winning side?
