River of Grass. 1994. USA. Written and directed by Kelly Reichardt. With Lisa Bowman, Larry Fessenden, Dick Russell. 35 mm. 76 min.
Reichardt's debut feature, first screened at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the tale of Cozy, a small-town girl who thought marrying her high school sweetheart would fix her broken-down life. Named after her father’s favorite drummer, Cozy Cole, she is so starved for attention that she does cartwheels and back flips in her small Florida home and pretends to wave at a nonexistent audience. In some way, her life begins when she meets a stoner named Lee and they go on the lam. But…from what?
