Jubilee. 1978. Great Britain. Written and directed by Derek Jarman. With Jenny Runacre, Nell Campbell, Toyah Wilcox, Adam Ant, Ian Charleson. 106 min.
Derek Jarman sharpens us up for a bit of the old ultraviolence of Thatcherite England in this quintessentially punk opera buffa. A spit in the eye of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee of 1977, the film imagines Elizabeth I transported 400 years into the future to behold her realm made blissfully rotten, as a gang of desultory anarchists binge on murder, sex, and art in scuzzy London town.
