Invasión. 1969. Argentina. Directed by Hugo Santiago. Screenplay by Jorge Luis Borges, Santiago, based on the story by Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares. With Olga Zubarry, Lautaro Murúa, Juan Carlos Paz. 35mm archival print. In Spanish; English subtitles. 123 min.

Jorge Luis Borges wrote that “a film is the detailed projection both seen and heard, enriched and magical, of something dreamed and barely glimpsed….Invasión seems unlike any other film that I have seen, and may well be the first example of a whole new fantastic genre.” Borges’s story, with its echoes of Homer’s Iliad, is indeed spellbinding and intricate; it is the legend of a city, real or imagined, that has fallen under siege and must be defended by a handful of men who may or may not be heroes.

This film accompanies Future Imperfect: The Uncanny in Science Fiction.
