Ex Machina. 2014. USA. Written and directed by Alex Garland. With Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson. Digital projection. 108 min.
Writer-director Alex Garland successfully invokes Ludwig Wittgenstein, Harold Pinter, Roman Polanski, and Alan Turing as he refashions the Frankenstein myth (or perhaps more aptly, the Future Eve) for our present-day age of artificial intelligence and gender fluidity. A chamber piece set in a bell jar, in which humanoid Alicia Vikander proves man’s undoing, Ex Machina quickens the mind and body. It is one of those rare films that is as intellectually and morally upsetting as it is erotic. Courtesy of A24.
